Mount Doom
The perfect 2,291 m cone that played Mount Doom, the youngest vent of the Tongariro complex.
Ngāuruhoe is a 2,500-year-old cone that erupted more than sixty times in the 20th century, most recently in 1975. Its symmetry made it Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings. The summit is sacred to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, who ask visitors not to climb it; the best views are from the Crossing, Tama Lakes and Ridge Track.
⚠ Iwi and DOC ask that you do not climb Ngāuruhoe.
On screen. Mount Doom (digitally altered), The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
❄ Wears a snow cap from roughly June to October.
