Sheltered beech forest beside a boulder-strewn mountain stream, home to whio (blue duck).
The Whakapapanui Walk follows the stream down-valley from the village through mountain beech, with openings onto the water. It is the walk to do when cloud sits on the mountain, and a good place to spot whio, the rare blue duck of fast alpine rivers.
