Ohakune Old Coach Road
Easy 15 kmone way 4–5 hr one way (2 hr return to the viaduct) ↑ 715 m
A curving 1908 railway viaduct you can walk across, on the historic Old Coach Road.
The Ohakune Old Coach Road follows the cobbled route used to connect the two railheads of the North Island Main Trunk before 1908. Its highlight is the 284 m Hapuawhenua Viaduct, a curved steel structure now open to walkers and cyclists, beside its 1987 concrete replacement, with a tunnel, native forest and views to Ruapehu.
